EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Stunning Encounter: Humboldt Squid and European Flying Squid This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two remarkable cephalopods: the Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas, 1) and the European flying squid (Todarodes sagittatus, 2). The Humboldt squid, also known as the "devil squid," is a large, elongated cephalopod found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Its body can reach up to 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length, making it one of the largest squid species. The Humboldt squid is known for its distinctive eyes, which are larger than its brain, and its long, thin arms. The European flying squid, on the other hand, is a smaller, more agile cephalopod found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. It can grow up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length and is characterized by its wing-like fins, which it uses to glide through the water. The European flying squid is also known as the "flying jellyfish squid" or the "gliding squid." The Ommastrephes species, represented by Ommastrephes geant (giant squid, 3) and Ommastrephes des pecheurs (common jumbo squid, 4), are also depicted in the engraving. These deep-sea dwellers are much larger than the Humboldt and European flying squids, with the giant squid reaching up to 13 meters (43 feet) in length. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving provides a glimpse into the rich diversity of the cephalopod world and the natural history of the late 1800s. It is a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrator and engraver, as well as the curiosity and wonder of the natural world that inspired them.
