This evocative image captures the poignant moment of Irish Jacobite troops bidding farewell to their homeland as they embark on their journey to France following the signing of the Treaty of Limerick on October 3, 1691. Known as the 'Flight of the Wild Geese,' this mass exodus of soldiers marked the end of the Williamite War in Ireland and the beginning of a long and tumultuous diaspora for thousands of Irish Catholics. The scene is one of chaos and desperation, with troops and their families scrambling to board overcrowded boats, their faces etched with a mixture of determination and despair. Women with children in tow attempted to join their loved ones, but many were left behind or perished in the water as the boats pushed off from the shore.
