John o' Arnha: The Scottish Traveler's Encounter with the Monstrous Kelpie This hand-colored copperplate engraving, entitled "John o' Arnha, Montrose, Scotland, 1826," depicts a legendary tale of John o' Arnha, a Scottish traveler, and his encounter with a monstrous water creature known as the Kelpie. The scene unfolds on a dark and ominous road, where John, dressed in a coarse coat and kilt, stands tall and determined, choking the Kelpie with all his might. The monster, with the body of a horse and the head of a man, tries to grapple John, but he catches it by the throat, silencing its roar that echoed like the sound of corn mills.
