EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Jumbo the elephant in his youth, as he resided at the Gardens of the Zoological Society in Regents Park during the year 1882. The image, sketched with remarkable detail, shows Jumbo attempting to force open a heavy door, an action that ultimately led to the loss of his tusks. The incident occurred when Jumbo, known for his immense strength and size, became frustrated with being kept inside his enclosure and, in a display of exasperation, charged at the door with all his might. Unfortunately, the door proved to be unyielding, and Jumbo's tusks were severely damaged in the process. The print also reveals another significant event from Jumbo's life during this period. Towards the bottom right corner, a surgeon can be seen attending to an abscess in Jumbo's jaw. The operation was a common procedure during the late 19th century for treating various ailments in captive elephants. This image offers a rare glimpse into the life of Jumbo, showcasing both the challenges and care he experienced during his time at the Zoological Society. Jumbo, who gained worldwide fame later in life, was a magnificent creature who captured the hearts of many. This evocative print not only highlights the strength and size of this iconic elephant but also serves as a reminder of the complexities and realities of caring for such a magnificent creature in the late Victorian era.
