EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of the Landing of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, at Lyme Regis on 11 June 1685. The Monmouth Rebellion, an attempt to overthrow King James II of England and replace him with Monmouth, took place between May and July of that year. Monmouth, a Protestant and the illegitimate son of King Charles II, had gained popular support with his promises to uphold Protestantism and restore the constitutional government. The scene depicted in this print shows Monmouth and his followers disembarking from a ship on the rocky beach of Lyme Regis, a coastal town in Dorset. Monmouth, dressed in a red coat and wearing a plumed hat, is seen leading his horse down the rampart, with his men following closely behind, also on horseback. The sea is rough and the sky is overcast, adding an air of tension and uncertainty to the scene. Monmouth's rebellion was doomed from the start. The King's forces were well-prepared, and Monmouth's army was poorly equipped and disorganized. Monmouth was captured at the Battle of Sedgemoor on 6 July, and was later tried and executed for treason. This print is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in English history, when the balance of power shifted and the Protestant succession was secured. The image captures the excitement and hope that Monmouth's rebellion had inspired, as well as the harsh realities of war and the consequences of political upheaval.
