EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Morfeo, Nettuno e delle Furie" (Morpheus, Neptune and the Furies), is an exquisite illustration taken from Aubin Louis Millin's "Peintures de Vases Antiques" (Pictures of Ancient Vases). The engraving, published in Florence in 1842 by Giulio Ferrario, showcases a mythological scene featuring the god Neptune, or Poseidon, accompanied by Leto, the goddess of childbirth, and two of her children, Apollo and Artemis. The scene is further adorned with one of the Graces and one of the Furies. Leto, depicted in the center, is shown in a serene and graceful pose, cradling the infant Apollo in her arms, while Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, stands beside her, holding a bow and arrow. Neptune, the god of the sea, is shown in his regal attire, wearing a trident and a crown adorned with coral and pearls. The Grace, represented by the figure on the left, is shown bestowing a golden apple upon Leto, while the Fury, on the right, guards the scene with a menacing expression and a serpent. This scene is believed to depict the wedding of Neptune and Amphitrite, the sea goddess, and the presence of Leto and her children is explained by various mythological sources. In one version of the story, Leto was present as a guest at the wedding, while in another, she was called upon to help calm the stormy seas during the ceremony. The intricate details of the engraving, from the flowing robes of the gods to the delicate patterns on the vase, highlight the skill and artistry of the engraver. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the enduring allure of Greek mythology and the artistry of the past.
