EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Louise-Françoise de Bourbon, Duchesse d'Énghein (1673-1743): A Regal Figure in French History" Louise-Françoise de Bourbon, Duchesse d'Énghein, born in 1673, was an illegitimate daughter of King Louis XIV of France and his mistress, the Marquise de Montespan. Despite her humble origins, she rose to prominence in French society and became a significant figure in the court of King Louis XV. This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," showcases the Duchesse d'Énghein in all her regal splendor. The portrait, originally painted by Bonnard, captures her elegant and refined demeanor. The Duchesse is depicted wearing a sumptuous robe of deep blue velvet, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and lace, reflecting the opulence of the French court. Her hair is styled in the latest fashion, cascading in soft curls over her shoulders, and her eyes are framed by thick eyeliner and false lashes, enhancing her striking features. The Duchesse d'Énghein was known for her intelligence, wit, and charm, and she used these qualities to navigate the treacherous waters of the French court. She was a patron of the arts and a generous philanthropist, and her salon was a gathering place for the intellectual elite of the time. Despite her illegitimate birth, she was accepted into high society and even served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie-Anne de Bourbon. This image of the Duchesse d'Énghein serves as a reminder of the complexities and contradictions of French history. It showcases the opulence and elegance of the French court, as well as the remarkable resilience and adaptability of those who rose above their humble beginnings to claim their place in history.
