This poignant image, circa 1907, captures the moment of disappointment and frustration experienced by a young boy as he tries on a vest that has shrunk in the wash. The cause of his distress? The use of an ordinary soap - not Lux. The artist, anonymous, masterfully conveys the child's emotions through his expressive face and body language. His downcast eyes, puckered lips, and clenched fists speak volumes about the disappointment he feels as he realizes that his cherished vest no longer fits. At the time, washing clothes was a laborious and time-consuming task. Households relied on traditional soaps to clean their laundry, unaware of the potential shrinkage that could result. Lux, however, was a game-changer. Introduced in the early 1900s, this innovative soap was marketed as being gentle on woolens and other fabrics, ensuring they would not shrink during the washing process. The boy in the photograph, however, seems oblivious to this new solution. His mother or caregiver, perhaps unaware or unable to afford Lux, has used a regular soap instead. The consequence?
