EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an intriguing assemblage of marine and terrestrial creatures. At the center of the image, an octopus (likely a tuberculate pelagic octopus, Ocythoe tuberculata) gracefully spreads its arms, displaying the remarkable dexterity and versatility of this enigmatic mollusk. Surrounding the octopus, various other fascinating organisms are depicted. A pseudoscorpion, most likely Chthonius orthodactylus, clings to a rock with its pincers outstretched, showcasing its predatory nature. Two species of octopuses, Octyptera bicolor and Ocythoe tuberculata, are also present, each with their unique characteristics. The terrestrial realm is represented by two insects: a false oil beetle, Oedemera nobilis, and an Obisium or Obisie species. The false oil beetle, with its vibrant colors and elongated antennae, is a striking contrast to the more subdued Obisium, which blends seamlessly into its environment. This intricately detailed engraving not only highlights the beauty and diversity of these creatures but also serves as a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrator and engraver. The meticulous hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and realism, making this an exquisite piece of natural history art.
