EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving by Verico after Giulio Ferrario, we are transported back in time to the grand audience hall of the Public Ministry of Finance in Istanbul during the Ottoman Empire. The scene is filled with officials and accountants, diligently attending to the financial matters of the empire. The Ministerro Pubblico delle Finanze, or the Grand Vizier, sits at the head of the room, surrounded by his esteemed servants and advisors. The Sultan's ambassadors, dressed in their finest attire, stand before the Grand Vizier, presenting their letters and seeking audience. The room is adorned with intricate Islamic geometric patterns, reminiscent of the rich cultural heritage of the Ottoman Empire. To the left, military personnel and musicians play traditional Ottoman instruments, adding an air of celebration to the occasion. In the background, we can see the seraglio, or harem, where the Sultan's wives and concubines resided. This engraving, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842, offers a glimpse into the historical fashion and social dynamics of the Ottoman Empire. The meticulous details of the engraving, from the intricate patterns on the officials' robes to the ornate decorations on the walls, provide a vivid and authentic representation of the era. The Public Ministry of Finance was a crucial institution in the Ottoman Empire, responsible for managing the vast financial resources of the empire. This grand scene captures the importance and grandeur of the institution, as well as the cultural and historical significance of Istanbul during the Ottoman period.
