EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, created in 1837, showcases two exquisite marine worms, Perinereis nuntia and Syllis armillaris, from the depths of the ocean. The illustration, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, was published by Batelli e Figli in Florence, Italy, as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science. Perinereis nuntia, also known as the Bar-toothed nereid, is depicted on the left side of the illustration. With its long, slender body adorned with distinctive bar-like teeth, this marine worm is a member of the Polynoidae family. The intricate details of its segmented body and gills are beautifully captured in the meticulous hand-coloring. Syllis armillaris, or the nereid with armored rings, is illustrated on the right side of the print. This marine worm belongs to the Syllidae family and is easily recognizable by the prominent rings on its body. The delicate shading and precise detailing in the engraving highlight the worm's segmented anatomy and the undulating texture of its skin. This illustration is a testament to the exceptional skill and artistry of the collaborative team, including Turpin, Pretre, and Carini, who brought the intricacies of these marine creatures to life through their masterful use of copperplate stipple engraving. The result is a visually stunning and scientifically accurate representation of Perinereis nuntia and Syllis armillaris, offering a glimpse into the rich diversity of marine life during the 19th century.
