Le Celibataire et l'Homme marie,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a theatrical production staged at the Odeon Theatre in Paris during 1822, featured the renowned French actress Fanny Chalboz in the dual roles of Perrier and Dupont. In this handcoloured copperplate engraving from Charles Malos Almanach des Spectacles par K.Y.Z, published by Chez Janet, Paris, in 1823, we find Perrier, portrayed by Mlle. Fanny Chalboz, depicted as Dupont in a scene from the play. The intriguing plot of "Le Celibataire et l'Homme marie" revolves around the contrasting lives of Perrier, a celibate nun, and Dupont, a married man. In this particular scene, Perrier, disguised as Dupont, infiltrates her friend's household to test her husband's fidelity. The engraving captures the moment of revelation, with Perrier, dressed as Dupont, confronting the unsuspecting husband, Nicholas Brazier, played by M. Perrier, in the presence of his wife and the kitchen maids, La Bourguignonne and Cuisinières. The elaborate costumes and theatrical setting of the engraving transport us back to the 19th century and offer a glimpse into the world of French theatre during this era. The intricate details of the handcolouring further enhance the visual appeal of the print, making it a captivating piece of historical art. The play, which combined elements of comedy, drama, and dance, was a popular success, and this engraving serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of Fanny Chalboz's performance as Perrier and Dupont.
