EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by F. Sansom from a botanical illustration by Sydenham Edwards, showcases two beautiful and distinct flowers: the Quince, Cydonia oblonga, and the Poppy, Papaver rhoeas. The Quince flower, represented here in its icosandria form, boasts an intricate and elegant appearance with its five petals arranged in a star-like pattern around a central disc. The Quince is a deciduous tree native to the Caucasus and western Asia, with edible fruit that is often used in jams, jellies, and other culinary applications. Adorning the right side of the print is the vibrant and iconic Poppy, in its polyandria form, with its distinctive red bloom and large, velvety petals. The Poppy is a common flower found throughout Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, and is known for its opiate alkaloids, which have been used for medicinal and recreational purposes throughout history. This stunning botanical illustration was produced as part of the Lectures on Botany, as delivered in the Botanic Garden at Lambeth, in 1805 by the renowned botanist and naturalist, William Curtis. The illustration serves as a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of Sydenham Edwards and F. Sansom, providing a captivating glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century.
