EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Kull, published in Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History in 1841, showcases a diverse array of marine creatures. Among them, we find several fascinating and often misunderstood species. In the foreground lies the Hagfish, Myxine glutinosa (1), a slime eel with a unique anatomy that allows it to survive in the deep ocean. Nearby, two species of lamprey eels are depicted: the River Lamprey, Petromyzon fluviatilis (2), and the European Broodstock Lamprey, Petromyzon marinus. Both are characterized by their elongated, eel-like bodies and the presence of a sucking disc on their heads. Moving on, we encounter the Torpedo Ray, Raja ocellata (3), a small electric ray that uses electric shocks to stun its prey. The Great White Shark, Squalus carcharias (4), is depicted in its fearsome glory, with its iconic triangular dorsal fin and powerful jaws. The Vulnerable Rat Fish, Chimaera monstrosa (5), is shown with its distinctive elongated snout and large, wing-like pectoral fins. Lastly, two critically endangered species are featured: the European Sea Sturgeon, Acipenser sturio (6), with its distinctive long, slender body and rows of bony plates, and the Great White Shark, Squalus carcharias (4), which faces numerous threats, including overfishing and habitat destruction. This stunning piece of natural history art not only showcases the beauty and diversity of the marine world but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these remarkable creatures.
