Step back in time with this image of the salt pans at Chatelaillon-Plage near La Rochelle, France, circa 1910s. The salt pans, or "marais salants" in French, stretch out as far as the eye can see, forming a picturesque tableau of the region's rich salt production industry. During the 1910s and 1920s, the salt industry was a significant economic force along the west coast of France. The production process involved flooding the shallow pans with seawater, allowing it to evaporate under the hot sun. As the water receded, the salt crystallized, forming layers that were then harvested and transported for various uses. The salt pans were often located in marshy areas, making them a unique and intriguing part of the landscape.
