EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving is a stunning representation of three intriguing marine creatures: the Snake Blenny (Ophidion barbatum), Lesser Spiny Eel (Macrognathus aculeatus), and Wolf Fish (Anarhichas lupus). The engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, offers a detailed and accurate portrayal of these fascinating underwater dwellers. The Snake Blenny, depicted in image 73, is a small, elongated fish with a serpentine body and large, expressive eyes. Its mouth is positioned at the end of its long snout, allowing it to hide among rocks and coral reefs, blending in with its surroundings. Image 74 showcases the Lesser Spiny Eel, a slender, eel-like fish with a prominent dorsal fin and several small, venomous spines along its back. This elusive creature is a master of disguise, able to change color and texture to blend in with its environment. Lastly, the Wolf Fish, shown in image 75, is a powerful and predatory fish with a distinctive, wolf-like head and large, sharp teeth, as depicted in images 76 and 77. This formidable creature is a top predator in its environment and is known for its aggressive hunting behavior. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was a pioneer in the field of ichthyology and is often referred to as the German Buffon. His meticulously detailed and beautifully illustrated encyclopedia remains an invaluable resource for marine biologists and natural history enthusiasts alike.
