View of the RE storeyard from farmhouse, Delacroix Farm, Sailly-sur-la-Lys. Birds eye view of the Delacroix Farm as laid out as our depot. On extreme left was the large tent where numbers of French civilian carpenters augmented our Sapper carpenters in making revetment frames, dugout frames etc. which were then stacked under cover on the left of the cartway. On the right of the cartway are our wagon lines behind which, on extreme right, under cover are our horse lines. Extensively annotated on sketch book page. By Lieutenant Major John Empson Tindall, MC (b.1885). He joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain in the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF and then became Major commanding the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF. This evocative photograph print captures the view of the RE (Royal Engineers) storeyard from Delacroix Farm during World War I. The bird's eye perspective offers a comprehensive layout of the farm as it was transformed into a depot. On the extreme left, a large tent housed French civilian carpenters who worked alongside the Sapper carpenters to construct revetment frames and dugout frames. These structures were then carefully stacked under cover on the left side of the cartway. On the right side of the cartway, the wagon lines are visible, with the horse lines extending to the far right, providing shelter for the animals. The meticulous annotations on the sketchbook page by Lieutenant Major John Empson Tindall, MC, further illustrate the intricacies of the camp's organization. Tindall, who joined the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Major, served in various capacities with the 1st Home Counties Field Company, Royal Engineers (later the 490th Field Company, Royal Engineers), 8th Division, BEF, and then became the commanding officer of the 505th (Wessex) Field Company, 57th Division, BEF. The photo was likely taken circa 1915, during a pivotal period in the Western Front conflict.
