EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by Pfitzer after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three fascinating European mammals: the Striped Polecat (Ictonyx striatus), European Pine Martin (Martes martes), and Sable (Martes zibellina). The Striped Polecat, also known as the African civet or Marte zorille, is a small, agile mammal with distinctive black and white stripes. Native to Africa, this elusive creature is a member of the weasel family and is known for its strong, distinctive odor. The European Pine Martin, or Marte commune, is a medium-sized member of the weasel family, with a slender body and bushy tail. This solitary, nocturnal creature is well-adapted to forested environments and is known for its dexterity and agility. The Sable, or Marte zibeline, is a beautiful, fur-bearing mammal with a thick, luxurious coat of silver-tipped hairs. Native to Europe and Asia, this elusive creature is a prized target for fur traders and is an important species in the ecology of its forested habitats. This exquisite engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of these three European mammals but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century. The intricate details of the animals' fur, posture, and expressions are captured with remarkable accuracy, making this a true masterpiece of natural history art.
