EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Buonajuti, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1843, offers a captivating view of the interior of the Coliseum in Rome, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre or the Colosseum. The intricately detailed illustration invites us to explore the multi-layered architecture of this iconic symbol of ancient Rome. The Coliseum, built between 70-80 AD, was an innovative structure designed for entertainment and spectacle. Its elliptical shape, measuring approximately 189 meters long and 156 meters wide, could accommodate an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The interior, as depicted in this engraving, reveals the complex system of layers that facilitated the various games and spectacles. The lower level, visible in the foreground, was where gladiators and wild animals fought to the death. The second level, partially concealed, was used for mock sea battles and other water spectacles. The third level, at the top, was reserved for the elite, who watched the events unfold from their luxurious seating. The Coliseum's architectural brilliance is further highlighted by the intricate details in this engraving. The vaulted ceilings, arches, and columns are all meticulously rendered, providing a glimpse into the grandeur and complexity of ancient Roman engineering. This historical illustration not only serves as a testament to the artistic skill of Buonajuti and Giulio Ferrario but also offers a fascinating insight into the past, allowing us to appreciate the architectural marvel that is the Coliseum.
