This evocative image captures the mass exodus of the inhabitants of Antwerp, Belgium during the early days of World War I in October 1914. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the impending German invasion, the populace of Antwerp, many carrying their most precious belongings, made their way across the River Scheldt on a makeshift bridge of barges. The bridge, formed by the ingenious connection of boats and barges, was the only means of escape for the citizens of Antwerp as the German forces advanced. The flames and smoke from the distant warfare add to the sense of urgency and desperation, as the spire and rooftops of Antwerp's buildings fade into the distance.
