This historical photograph presents the innovative Short-Mayo Composite aircraft concept designed under Mayo patents by Short Brothers Ltd., combining two separate airplanes—the larger seaplane known as 'Maia' carrying atop it a smaller floatplane named 'Mercury.' Developed primarily to extend transatlantic flight ranges during pre-war years, this composite approach allowed Mercury to be launched mid-air after Maia provided initial lift-off power—thereby conserving fuel for longer flights without heavy load constraints upon takeoff from water surfaces—a creative solution reflecting bold experimentation within early aviation technology development.
