EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph captures the stern yet resolute gaze of General Sir David Henderson, the esteemed Chief of the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. The image, taken in the early 1900s, exudes an Edwardian or Victorian air with its intricately designed lantern slide frame. Henderson's uniform, adorned with numerous medals and insignia, proudly displays his military accomplishments. Born in 1868, Henderson joined the British Army in 1887 and served in the Second Boer War. He later transferred to the Royal Engineers, where he developed an interest in aviation. Henderson became a pioneer in military aviation, making his first solo flight in 1911. By 1912, he was the Commanding Officer of the Royal Flying Corps. During World War I, Henderson played a crucial role in expanding the RFC and developing its tactics. He oversaw the creation of the first RFC squadrons and the introduction of advanced aircraft, such as the Sopwith Camel. Henderson's leadership led to significant victories in the skies, including the Battle of Messines and the Battle of Cambrai. After the war, Henderson continued to serve in the Royal Air Force, eventually retiring in 1927. His legacy as a visionary military leader and pioneer in military aviation lives on, making this photograph a valuable piece of history. The intricately designed lantern slide frame adds to the image's antique charm, transporting us back in time to the early days of military aviation.
