EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two endangered primates of the Old World: the Orang utan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Silvery Gibbon (Hylobates moloch). The Orang utan, also known as the 'man of the forest,' is a large primate native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. With their distinctive reddish-brown fur and long, powerful arms, they are the world's largest tree-climbing mammals. The Orang utan is currently listed as critically endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The Silvery Gibbon, on the other hand, is a smaller primate, with a silver-grey coat and long, graceful limbs. They are found in the forests of Southeast Asia, from southern China to Indonesia. The Silvery Gibbon is currently listed as endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching for the pet trade, and hunting for bushmeat. The illustration, created by J.G. Pretre and engraved by Cignozzi under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, provides a historical record of these magnificent primates. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this print allows for a high degree of detail and texture, capturing the unique features of each primate. This beautiful and rare image serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting these endangered species and their habitats.
