EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two remarkable birds of prey native to the Americas: the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and the Southern Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus). The illustration, taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Oiseaux" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) by Frederic Cuvier, was produced under the artistic direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by David. Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History, was responsible for the original painting that inspired this engraving. The intricate details of the Osprey and Southern Crested Caracara are beautifully captured in this artwork. The Osprey, also known as the sea hawk, is a fish-eating bird with a distinctive broad and flattened wings and a hooked beak. The Southern Crested Caracara, on the other hand, is a carrion and omnivorous bird, easily identified by its distinctive crest and feathered head plumes. Both birds are depicted in their natural habitats, with the Osprey perched on a branch over the water and the Southern Crested Caracara standing on a rocky outcrop. This historical artwork is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the naturalists and artists of the time, who dedicated themselves to documenting the natural world for future generations. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this print adds depth and texture to the illustration, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
