This evocative photograph captures the tense atmosphere of Belfast, Northern Ireland during the late 1960s, as people watch an Orange Order parade make its way through the city streets. The Orange Order, a Protestant fraternal organization with deep historical and cultural significance in Northern Ireland, held annual parades to commemorate the Protestant victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. However, by the late 1960s, these parades had become a source of deep division and conflict between the Protestant and Catholic communities. In this image, we see a large crowd gathered on the pavement and the roadway, their expressions a mix of curiosity, apprehension, and determination. The men in the foreground, dressed in suits and hats, seem to be deep in conversation, while the women and children watch the parade with a sense of wonder and perhaps even fear.
