EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-coloured lithograph depicts the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), a magnificent bird species native to the cloud forests of Central America. The illustration is taken from John Gould's "A Monograph of the Trogonid, or Family of Trogons," published in 1838. The work was a collaborative effort between John Gould, a renowned English publisher and printmaker, and his wife Elizabeth, a skilled artist and colourist. The Quetzal in this illustration is shown perched gracefully on a branch, its vibrant plumage on full display. The male bird is easily recognizable by its long, iridescent green tail feathers and brilliant red chest, which contrast sharply with the darker green of its body and wings. The female, less colorful but equally beautiful, is shown in the background, her feathers a muted green and brown. The intricate detail of the Quetzal's anatomy is evident in the illustration, from the delicate quills of its feathers to the curved beak and the intricate patterns on its head. The artist's skillful use of colour adds depth and texture to the image, bringing the Quetzal to life and capturing the essence of this enchanting bird. The Quetzal is a symbol of good fortune and renewal in many Central American cultures, and is often considered a sacred bird. This illustration provides a glimpse into the natural world of the nineteenth century, offering a window into a time when the wonders of the natural world were still being explored and documented in such meticulous detail.
