EDITORS COMMENTS
Two poignant photographs capturing the spirit of resilience and determination during the First World War, as blinded soldiers and sailors from St. Dunstan's took part in a regatta at Marlow on the River Thames in 1918. On the left, the finish of the fours race is depicted, with the bungalow annexe team triumphantly crossing the line. St. Dunstan's, founded by Sir Arthur Pearson, a visually impaired man himself, offered rehabilitation and training to those who had lost their sight in the war. The regatta was an essential part of their recovery process, providing a sense of camaraderie and purpose. On the right, Private J London, the victor of the single sculling event, is shown in his boat with Miss Gordon, a nurse from St. Dunstan's who acted as his cox. London's determination and focus are evident as he prepares for the race, with the support of the dedicated St. Dunstan's team and nurses. These photographs offer a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of those who served during the Great War, and the vital role that organisations like St. Dunstan's played in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
