This evocative image captures the RMS Carmania, a British armed merchant cruiser, off the coast of Malta during the First World War in 1915. Originally launched as an ocean liner for the Cunard Line in 1905, the Carmania was later converted for military use when the conflict broke out. With her impressive size and sleek design, she was an imposing sight on the open sea, armed with a battery of twelve 6-inch guns and capable of reaching impressive speeds. The Carmania played a significant role in the war, engaging in several notable actions against German commerce raiders. In one such encounter, she sank the German ship SMS Cap Trafalgar, marking the first victory for a British armed merchant cruiser in the conflict.
