EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the indomitable spirit of Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, as he rides through the streets of Kimberley, South Africa, in 1900. Roberts, a renowned military commander, played a pivotal role in the Second Boer War, which lasted from 1899 to 1902. Born on January 30, 1832, Roberts began his military career at the age of 15 in the British Army. He rose through the ranks, serving in India, Afghanistan, and Sudan, before being appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in South Africa during the Boer War. In this image, Roberts is depicted leading his horse through the dusty streets of Kimberley, the diamond mining town that was besieged by the Boer forces during the war. The scene is one of determination and resilience, as Roberts and his men marched towards victory against formidable opposition. The photograph is a testament to Roberts' leadership and courage, as well as the indomitable spirit of the British forces during this tumultuous period in South African history. Roberts' military career spanned over 50 years, and he is best known for his victories in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British Army, for his bravery during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. Roberts retired from the military in 1900, and he died on November 14, 1914, at the age of 82. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Roberts' legacy as a military commander and his indelible impact on the history of South Africa.
