In this historic photograph, astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom proudly displays his NASA Distinguished Service Medal and Project Mercury lapel pin during a news conference at Cape Canaveral on July 23, 1961. The day before, Grissom had made history as the second American to fly in space, achieving an altitude of 118 miles during a sub-orbital flight. The Distinguished Service Medal is the highest decoration bestowed by NASA and is awarded for exceptional achievements and meritorious service.
