EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the enigmatic figure of Scevole Sainte-Marthe (1536-1623), a French administrator, poet, jurist, and historian whose life was marked by intrigue and controversy. Born in Loudun, Sainte-Marthe rose to prominence in the royal court of Henry II and Catherine de Medici, serving as intendant of the royal domains and later becoming president of the Parlement of Bordeaux. However, Sainte-Marthe's tenure in Bordeaux was marred by his involvement in the infamous Affair of the Poisons, a series of trials in which numerous individuals, including members of the nobility, were accused of practicing witchcraft and sorcery. Sainte-Marthe was himself implicated in the affair and was eventually exonerated, but the scandal left a lasting stain on his reputation. Despite the controversy, Sainte-Marthe continued to write and publish, producing works of poetry, jurisprudence, and history. His most famous work, "Histoire de la ville de Loudun," is a detailed account of the history of his hometown, which was published posthumously in 1625. This image of Sainte-Marthe, with his piercing gaze and furrowed brow, speaks to the complex and intriguing life of this remarkable French figure. The print, produced by Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of intrigue, power, and passion.
