EDITORS COMMENTS
Silo of Asturias (c. 750-783 AD), also known as Silo I or Silo the Wise, was a prominent figure in the early Middle Aages of the Iberian Peninsula. He reigned as King of Asturias from 774 until his death in 783, marking the beginning of the Bermudez or Buregonid Dynasty. This engraving, depicting Silo in a regal pose, adorned with a crown and robes of royal purple, reflects the prestige and power he held during his reign. The Silo Dynasty emerged after the collapse of the Visigothic Kingdom, which had ruled much of the Iberian Peninsula since the 5th century. Silo's reign was marked by military successes against the Moors, who had invaded the peninsula in the 8th century. Under his leadership, the Kingdom of Asturias expanded, securing its position as a significant political force in the region. The engraving, with its rich colors, showcases the artistic style of the time, which was influenced by both Visigothic and Moorish artistic traditions. The intricate details of Silo's crown, the folds of his robes, and the texture of his beard all contribute to the vivid and captivating image. Silo's legacy extended beyond his military achievements. He is remembered as a wise and just ruler who promoted the spread of Christianity throughout his kingdom. The monastery of San Salvador de Celanova, founded during his reign, is a testament to his commitment to the faith and to the preservation of knowledge. This portrait of Silo of Asturias, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the early Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula. It serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that Silo and the Kingdom of Asturias played in shaping the political and cultural landscape of the region.
