EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the final moments of the SMS Szent István, an Austro-Hungarian Tegetthoff-class dreadnought battleship, as it sinks off the Dalmatian coast during the First World War on 10 June 1918. Launched in 1914, the Szent István was a formidable vessel, measuring over 170 meters in length and displacing over 22,000 tons. In this photograph, we see the once-proud warship hit by a series of torpedoes from the Italian navy, sending plumes of smoke and water into the air. The Szent István, named after Saint Stephen, the first King of Hungary, was the largest and most modern warship in the Austro-Hungarian navy at the time. Its sinking was a significant blow to the Central Powers, as it represented the loss of a valuable military asset and a symbol of national pride. The image captures the chaos and destruction of war at sea, with sailors scrambling to abandon ship as the vessel begins to capsize. The Dalmatian coast, with its rugged cliffs and clear blue waters, provides a stark contrast to the turmoil in the foreground. This haunting photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and the ephemeral nature of even the mightiest of warships.
