EDITORS COMMENTS
This 6th or 7th century engraving depicts Suintila, the Visigothic King of Hispania, Septimania, and Galicia, in a desperate moment of flight with his young son, Ricimer. The scene unfolds in a tented encampment, with the winds of change sweeping through the medieval landscape. Suintila, dressed in royal attire and brandishing a sword, rides atop a galloping horse, his eyes fixed on the horizon as he leads his son on a swift escape. By his side, Ricimer clings to his father, his small frame dwarfed by the powerful stallion. The Visigothic kingdom, which encompassed much of modern-day Spain, Portugal, and southern France, was a significant political and cultural force during the early Middle Ages. Suintila's reign, which lasted from 621 to 631, was marked by military campaigns, political intrigue, and religious upheaval. The reasons for Suintila's flight are not clear from this image, but it is a poignant reminder of the challenges and uncertainties that shaped the lives of medieval rulers and their families. This engraving, with its rich colors and dynamic composition, offers a glimpse into the high stakes world of medieval power struggles and the enduring bond between a father and his son.
