EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the tranquil landscape of a once-battlefield, an abandoned tank stands as a haunting reminder of the devastating impact of the First World War. Circa 1921, in this photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, taken by John Maclellan, the tank's rusted exterior is covered in a thick layer of dust and debris, a stark contrast to the lush greenery that surrounds it. A notice, attached to the tank in French, warns against entering the vehicle, its words etched in the fading ink of time. The notice reads, "Interdit d'entrer" - Forbidden to Enter. The tank's menacing presence, despite its current state of disrepair, is a testament to the fearsome technology that was unleashed on the Western Front during the 1910s. The 1920s, known as the Roaring Twenties, brought a sense of relief and optimism to Europe, but the memory of the horrors of the war lingered, as evidenced by the continued presence of these relics on the battlefield. The danger they posed, both to those who might be tempted to explore their interiors and to the local wildlife, served as a constant reminder of the destructive power that had shaped the land only a decade prior.
