This poignant photograph captures the aftermath of the destruction of the Visé Iron Bridge over the Meuse River in Belgium, following the Belgian forces' explosive detonation in August 1914. The First World War had just begun, and the German army was advancing towards the town of Visé, located in the southeastern part of Belgium. In an attempt to hinder the German advance and protect their homeland, the Belgian defenders deliberately blew up the iconic iron bridge, which connected the towns of Visé and Han-sur-Lesse. The image portrays the devastating impact of the explosion, with the twisted and mangled remains of the bridge lying in the Meuse River. The once-sturdy structure, which had stood for over 60 years, was reduced to a heap of metal and debris. The destruction of the bridge caused significant disruption to the German supply lines, delaying their advance and giving the Belgian forces valuable time to prepare for the battle.
