This photograph, taken circa 1905, showcases the William Tell Memorial in Altdorf, Switzerland, situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The memorial, designed by renowned Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling and unveiled in 1895, commemorates the legendary figure of William Tell, a national hero of Swiss folklore. William Tell, a Swiss folk hero from the late 13th century, is famously known for his defiance against tyranny. The story goes that Tell was ordered by Austrian ruler Gessler to shoot an apple off his son's head as a sign of loyalty. Tell, in protest, shot the apple instead from a distance, saving his son's life and earning the ire of the Austrian authorities. In this photograph, the embossed plinth of the memorial is adorned with intricate designs, including the Swiss flag, laurel wreath, and a crossbow, symbolizing Tell's famous feat.
