EDITORS COMMENTS
This poster, created in May 1937 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Illinois District 6, showcases the spirit of leisure and relaxation during a time of great economic hardship. The central image of the poster is a map of Illinois within a clock face, symbolizing the passage of time and the importance of taking a break from the daily grind. Surrounding the map are vignettes of people engaging in various leisure activities, each scene representing a different hour on the clock. At the top of the poster, a group of men and women are gathered around a campfire, enjoying a picnic and sharing stories. At the second hour, a couple is depicted playing checkers on a blanket in a sunlit park. In the third hour, a group of children are seen playing hopscotch and jacks on a sidewalk. At the fourth hour, a man is shown fishing in a serene lake, while at the fifth hour, a woman is seen reading a book in a cozy armchair. The sixth hour features a scene of a family having a barbecue, and at the seventh hour, a group of musicians are playing instruments in a band. At the eighth hour, a man is shown tending to a garden, while at the ninth hour, a woman is seen knitting by a window. In the tenth hour, a group of people are gathered around a pool, playing cards and laughing. At the eleventh hour, a man is shown playing a violin, and at the twelfth hour, a couple is depicted dancing in a ballroom. This poster was produced by the WPA as part of the Federal Arts Project, which aimed to provide employment opportunities for artists and promote cultural activities during the Great Depression. The poster was distributed throughout Illinois and served as a reminder that even in difficult times, it is important to take time for relaxation and enjoyment. The vibrant colors and lively scenes depicted in the poster continue to inspire and delight viewers today, making it a cherished piece of American history.
