EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative woodblock print, the young maiden Oshichi is depicted with a melancholic expression, her gaze fixed on the vignette above her head. The image, titled "Oshichi no Yūrei" or "The Ghost of Oshichi," is a poignant reminder of a tragic tale from Japan's Edo period. Oshichi was a beautiful young maiden who lived in the Ai no Uchi district of Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the late 16th century. She was deeply in love with a samurai named Katsunosuke, but their families disapproved of their union due to their different social classes. Desperate to be together, Oshichi took drastic measures. She set fire to her family's mansion, hoping that Katsunosuke would rescue her and they could escape the flames together. Unfortunately, Katsunosuke arrived too late, and Oshichi perished in the fire. Her ghost was said to haunt the Ai no Uchi district, and the vignette above her head in this print depicts the famous place where her tragic story unfolded. The intricately detailed woodcut shows a beautiful mansion engulfed in flames, with smoke billowing into the night sky. This haunting image of Oshichi, with her long, flowing hair and traditional Japanese attire, is a poignant reminder of the tragic love story that has captured the hearts of generations in Japan. The woodblock print, created in 1867, showcases the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of Japanese woodblock printing during the late Edo period. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the story of Oshichi to life, making this a truly captivating work of art.
