When welder Ken Rowden wasnt doing his day job, hed devote his evenings to his hobby

When welder Ken Rowden wasnt doing his day job, hed devote his evenings to his hobby welding.
After trying his hand at sketching, painting and sculpture in an attempt to find ways of expressing his creative ideas, Ken decided welding gave him the best results.
Ken, who produced his creations in a hut next to his Easington home, said: I do my art welding for three hours every night. I find it exhilarating. Many of Kens artworks were exhibited at the Metal Art Precinct in South Shields.
In this picture from our archives dated March 9, 1979, 44-year-old Ken is working on a model train he hoped would be presented to the mayor of Noisy-le-Sec, a town in France twinned with South Shields
