Mary Elizabeth Mimi Smith (nee Stanley; 24 April 1906 to 6 December 1991)

Mary Elizabeth Mimi Smith (nee Stanley; 24 April 1906 to 6 December 1991). Mary Elizabeth Stanley, known fondly as Aunt Mimi.
She was the maternal aunt and parental guardian of the English musician John Lennon. In 1965, Lennon bought her a bungalow in Poole, Dorset, where she lived until her death in 1991. Despite later losing touch with other family members, Lennon kept in close contact and telephoned her every week until his death in 1980. The Smiths house in Liverpool was later donated to The National Trust.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a cherished moment in the life of Mary Elizabeth Mimi Smith, the beloved aunt and guardian of legendary English musician John Lennon. Affectionately known as Aunt Mimi, she played a significant role in shaping Lennon's upbringing and nurturing his musical talents. The image showcases Aunt Mimi gazing out onto the picturesque Poole Harbour, near the Studlands and Sandbanks sear, from her bungalow that was gifted to her by Lennon himself. Taken circa 3rd December 1981, this snapshot offers a glimpse into Aunt Mimi's tranquil world during her final years. Clad in a furry hat against the chilly Dorset breeze, she stands beside an iron railing overlooking the vast expanse of sea before her. The view is breathtakingly serene - an idyllic backdrop for reflection and contemplation. Despite losing touch with other family members over time, Lennon remained devoted to his dear aunt until his untimely passing in 1980. Their bond was unbreakable as he diligently called her every week without fail. In recognition of their shared history and sentimental value attached to their former home in Liverpool, it was later donated to The National Trust. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to the enduring love between John Lennon and Aunt Mimi while immortalizing a remarkable woman who played an instrumental role in shaping one of music history's most influential figures.
