To the quiet French peasants pursuing their work in the field Mr Wilbur Wright appeared

To the quiet French peasants pursuing their work in the field Mr Wilbur Wright appeared almost as a wizard, when first the famous American aeroplanes began his flights near Pau they quickly ceased work and gazed awestruck as the mac sped through the air like a bird. Familiarity, however, if not breeding contempt, is at any rate lessening their wonder, and they begun to regard the aeroplane as a new kind of motor car. But it still fascinates them and the picture shows two peasants watching a flight.(Caption Daily Mirror 16th February 1909) 15th February 1909

EDITORS COMMENTS
To the quiet French peasants pursuing their work in the field, Mr. Wilbur Wright appeared almost as a wizard. When first the famous American aeroplanes began his flights near Pau, they quickly ceased work and gazed awestruck as the machine sped through the air like a bird. Familiarity, however, if not breeding contempt, is at any rate lessening their wonder, and they begin to regard the aeroplane as a new kind of motor car. But it still fascinates them. In this print from February 15th, 1909, we witness two peasants entranced by an ongoing flight. The image captures their amazement and curiosity as they pause amidst their agricultural tasks to observe this marvel of technology soaring above them. The scene reflects both achievement and advancement in aviation during this era of rapid progress. As Europe embraces the future with open arms, rural communities like these are introduced to new possibilities that transcend traditional modes of transport and travel. While agriculture remains at the heart of their daily lives – with carts filled with hay and oxen tending to crops – witnessing these aerial feats reminds them that technology holds immense potential for transforming various aspects of society. This photograph serves as a testament to how innovation can captivate even those living far from urban centers or commercial interests. It captures a moment frozen in time when ordinary individuals were touched by extraordinary achievements.
