The rectangular counter card features a striking image in the center, depicting a sailor in oilskins enjoying his pipe. The artwork is signed "T Insall" adding an artistic touch to this promotional piece. In the bottom right-hand corner, we see the recognizable trademark of a sailor inside a life-buoy, symbolizing safety and reliability. The text on the card proudly displays "PLAYERs // NAVY CUT // TOBACCO & // CIGARETTES" emphasizing the brand's quality products. The hanging loop at the top suggests that this card was once displayed prominently, catching the attention of passersby. On its reverse side, we find a label indicating that Mardons specialized in window novelties and various other services such as varnishing and gelatinizing showcards. They were located in both Bristol and London. A handwritten note accompanies this historical artifact, dating it back to 1926. This image evokes nostalgia for Nottingham's advertising scene during that time period while also highlighting elements associated with sailing, military uniforms, and naval imagery.
