A view shows the Labynkyr lake
A view shows the Labynkyr lake, some 100 km south of Oymyakon in the Republic of Sakha, northeast Russia, February 1, 2013. The coldest temperatures in the northern hemisphere have been recorded in Sakha, the location of the Oymyakon valley, where according to the United Kingdom Met Office a temperature of -67.8 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit) was registered in 1933 - the coldest on record in the northern hemisphere since the beginning of the 20th century. Yet despite the harsh climate, people live in the valley, and the area is equipped with schools, a post office, a bank, and even an airport runway (albeit open only in the summer). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking Labynkyr lake, nestled in the heart of the Republic of Sakha in northeast Russia. The image was taken on February 1,2013, showcasing the serene beauty of this remote location. Labynkyr lake is located approximately 100 km south of Oymyakon, a region known for recording some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded in the northern hemisphere. In fact, back in 1933, a bone-chilling temperature of -67.8 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit) was registered here – making it the coldest temperature ever documented since the beginning of the 20th century. Despite its extreme climate and harsh conditions, life persists in this valley. The area boasts essential amenities such as schools, a post office, a bank, and even an airport runway (although operational only during summer). This remarkable resilience showcases humanity's ability to adapt and thrive even under seemingly impossible circumstances. Photographer Maxim Shemetov has skillfully captured both the desolate yet enchanting nature surrounding Labynkyr lake and hints at human presence through his lens. The frozen landscape evokes a sense of tranquility while simultaneously reminding us that there are places on Earth where survival requires unwavering determination. In this photograph from Reuters Images collection by Maxim Shemetov, we are invited to contemplate both our planet's awe-inspiring natural wonders and our own indomitable spirit against all odds.
