A truffle is seen on a table in Alba north-western Italy
A truffle is seen on a table in Alba, north-western Italy November 11, 2013. Located in the heart of the Langhe - the hilly southern area of Italys northwestern Piedmont region - Alba is the countrys capital of white truffles, a variety of the prized fungus which grows underground. Truffles are found two to eight inches (5-20cm) below the ground near the roots of trees. They give off an odour which lasts for a limited period of time and can be detected with the assistance of well-trained dogs and experienced hunters. Output of white truffles, which are not cultivated and only grow naturally in forests, has fallen in Italy over the past few years, largely because climate change has brought a damaging mix of drought and torrential rains. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Alba, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of northwestern Italy's Piedmont region. The focal point of the image is a single truffle delicately placed on a table, showcasing its unique beauty and rarity. Known as the capital of white truffles, Alba boasts an enchanting landscape that nurtures these prized fungi. White truffles are a highly sought-after variety that grows underground, two to eight inches below the ground near tree roots. Their distinct aroma lingers for only a limited period and can be detected with the help of skilled dogs and experienced hunters. However, climate change has taken its toll on Italy's white truffle production in recent years due to droughts and torrential rains. The photographer skillfully captured this moment in November 2013 when Stefano Rellandini immortalized this precious gem against the backdrop of Alba's rustic charm. The image serves as a reminder of nature's fragility and our responsibility to protect it. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported to Alba's enchanting forests where elusive treasures lie hidden beneath the earth. It is an invitation to appreciate not only the culinary significance but also the ecological impact that these delicate fungi have on their surroundings.
