Falmouth waterfront from the harbour, Cornwall. Around 1925

Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the picturesque Falmouth waterfront as seen from the harbour in Cornwall, around 1925. The image was captured by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer of that era. Major Gill's passion for photography led him to deliver mesmerizing lectures on "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" during which he presented both stills and cine films to various esteemed groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. The glass lantern slide featured here is one of many quarter plate slides that Major Gill prolifically took with his ordinary camera. What sets these slides apart is their vibrant colorization, meticulously painted by his own hand to enhance their visual impact. This particular scene portrays a charming blend of fishing boats, traditional houses, and quintessential Cornish charm. While this caption highlights the historical significance of Major Gill's work and his contribution to preserving the beauty of Cornwall through photography, it does not mention any commercial use or affiliation with a specific company. Instead, it focuses on celebrating the artistic talent behind this stunning photograph print from the collection at Royal Cornwall Museum.
