Portable steam engine breakdown. Wheal Rose, Scorrier, Cornwall. About 1910-1920
The image shows a portable steam engine that could have been pulled by horses or a traction engine. However, this example is fitted with an eyed drawbar so it would have been pulled by a traction engine. The engine shown is small and used for driving farm machinery. The funnel is lowered for transit in this image but when erected would stand between 10-12ft high. Judging by the governors housing on the cylinder block this engine is an old example. It would appear that the studs securing the axle boss have pulled out of the sideplate causing the engine to drop on the offside. The wagon to the left of the image is loaded with sawn timber which could mean it was a portable sawmill going from farm to farm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a fascinating scene from Wheal Rose, Scorrier in Cornwall around 1910-1920. In the image, we see a portable steam engine breakdown that was commonly used to power farm machinery during that era. This particular engine is small in size and would have been pulled by a traction engine rather than horses, as indicated by its eyed drawbar. Notably, the lowered funnel suggests that this steam engine was being transported at the time of the photograph. When erected, it would stand impressively between 10-12 feet high. The presence of governors housing on the cylinder block indicates that this is an older model. Upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that some studs securing the axle boss have pulled out of the sideplate, causing the engine to drop on one side. This unfortunate mishap likely led to its current state of disrepair. Adjacent to this mechanical sight stands a wagon loaded with sawn timber. It is plausible to assume that this wagon belonged to a portable sawmill which traveled from farm to farm offering their services. Intriguingly, amidst all these industrial elements are Cornish men and boys donning hats while going about their daily activities. A bicycle can also be spotted nearby along with an adorable dog adding charm and character to this historical snapshot captured by Royal Cornwall Museum's archives.
