1835 Viscacha from mountains of Chile

Plate 42 from Volume 1 Trans Zool Soc London, 1835, " Additional remarks on the Genus Lagotis, with some account of a second species referrible to it" with contemporary hand colouring as issued. The plate illustrates the first scientific description and naming of the species in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (communicated to ZSL by E.T. Bennet May 26 1835). This plate was engraved and painted by Zeitler. Bennet notes that the animal is described from only one skin obtained by Mr. Gould taken from Chile (who would later take on Darwins Beagle bird specimens and identify the finches). the animal shows adaptive morphological convergence on lagomorph rabbits

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of scientific history - the 1835 Viscacha from the mountains of Chile. Plate 42 from Volume 1 Trans Zool Soc London, this image represents the first-ever scientific description and naming of this species in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London. Communicated to ZSL by E. T. Bennet on May 26,1835, it was engraved and painted by Zeitler with contemporary hand coloring as issued. In his account, Bennet reveals that this unique animal is described based on only one skin obtained by Mr. Gould during his expedition in Chile. Interestingly, Gould would later become renowned for identifying Darwin's Beagle bird specimens and recognizing their significance in evolutionary theory. The plate itself is a testament to artistic skill and precision, capturing every intricate detail of this fascinating creature. With its vibrant colors and meticulous engravings, it brings to life the beauty and complexity of nature. Notably, this illustration highlights an intriguing aspect known as adaptive morphological convergence on lagomorph rabbits – a phenomenon where unrelated species evolve similar traits due to shared environmental pressures. As we gaze upon this masterpiece from the 19th century, we are transported back in time to witness both scientific discovery and artistic excellence intertwine seamlessly. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, humans were captivated by nature's wonders and sought to understand them through observation and documentation.
