1843 Captain Robert Fitzroy Darwins capn

A portion of a letter written by Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Robert Fitzroy (b. 5 July 1805- d. 30 April 1865). Fitzroy was famous as the captain of HMS Beagle who, requiring a Gentlemans companion to avert the risk of depression and suicide, took the young Charles Darwin on his voyage. Fitzroy committed suicide at 59, mirroring his uncle Castlereigh (as he always feared he would) by cutting his own throat at home. He was prone to frequent mood swings and his handwriting technique, while very fluid, was also unusually large. Darwin respected the captain while at the same time fearing Fitzroy would always be his own worst enemy. Fitzroy is also remembered for his contributions to meteorology (he pioneered weather forecasting) and as a Governor of New Zealand from 1843-1845. Letter in collection of the photographer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a portion of a letter written by the renowned Captain Robert Fitzroy, who played an integral role in shaping scientific history. As the captain of HMS Beagle, Fitzroy embarked on a momentous voyage with his Gentlemans companion, Charles Darwin. This partnership was born out of Fitzroy's deep concern for preventing depression and suicide among his crew members. However, despite his noble intentions, Fitzroy battled his own inner demons throughout his life. Tragically mirroring the fate he always feared, he took his own life at the age of 59 by cutting his own throat at home. His frequent mood swings were evident in this letter through unusually large and fluid handwriting. Beyond being remembered as Darwin's captain and tragic end, Fitzroy made significant contributions to meteorology during his lifetime. He pioneered weather forecasting techniques that continue to shape our understanding today. Additionally, he served as Governor of New Zealand from 1843-1845. This thought-provoking print not only sheds light on the complex relationship between two influential figures but also serves as a reminder of the profound impact mental health struggles can have even on those who seemingly possess great strength and accomplishment.
