Alexander Wilson, US-Scottish naturalist

Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), American-Scottish naturalist. Wilson born in Scotland, was an apprentice weaver with an interest in poetry. His love of poetry resulted in a life of poverty and coupled with the political climate of unrest this resulted in problems with the law. He escaped to America in 1794 to become a teacher. Here he meet William Bartram and gained an interest in birds. In 1808 he published the first of a nine-volume work, American Ornithology, which illustrated 268 species including 26 previously unidentified birds. His 1810 meeting with Audubon was the inspiration for Audubons seminal work
